Work on Haskins memorial underway By E. Richard Walton STAFF WRITER rwalton@greenvillenews.com Gov. Jim Hodges said Friday that an 800-foot landscape median that is to be built outside of Bob Jones University to honor the late Rep. Terry Haskins is a suitable memorial to the hard-working lawmaker. "It'll give us a chance every time we drive by here we'll think of Terry Haskins," Hodges said. He characterized the median, which will be constructed in front of BJU on Wade Hampton Boulevard, as "a living memorial" to Haskins, who died of cancer in October 2000. "We're happy the state can be a part of this." The governor made his remarks in the presence of Haskins' wife, Rep. Gloria Haskins, the lawmakers four sons and family. More than 125 lawmakers, guests and students participated the 45-minute ceremony at noon on a sun-filled BJU campus. The memorial to Haskins is a joint effort by the state, the city of Greenville and Bob Jones University, officials said. Gloria Haskins, who now holds her husband's elected office, said the couple "courted, fell in love" and "were married" on BJU's campus. Mayor Knox White said the Haskins memorial will be another "gateway" into the city. He said he took interest in the urban environment. Haskins was a 1976 BJU graduate, served on the Greenville City Council from 1983-86 before taking his seat in the Statehouse in 1987. Haskins served 18 years as an elected official; he was speaker pro tempore of the House at the time of his death. Two of his sons fondly recalled how their dad would take them to the International House of Pancakes. Haskin's BJU professor DeWitt Jones recounted his former student's substantial sense of humor. E.
